Sun powers Sunshine State community transporter

Sun powers Sunshine State community transporter

Posted 1 year ago in the Solar Energy category by Nate Lew
Members of a community in the southwest of the Sunshine State are increasingly mobile thanks in part to the very item after which their state is named.

A tram drawing solar power transports more than 800,000 passengers in Pelican Bay, which is located on the Gulf of Mexico. Logging more than 25,000 miles per year, the tram spares the skies over the community about 22,000 pounds of carbon after abandoning gasoline for a more environmentally conscious power source.

"We look forward to effectively using the sun to power our transportation system and continue our ongoing initiative to reduce impact on, and preserve the tranquility and beauty of, Pelican Bay," Pelican Bay Foundation Chairman Bill Carpenter told Domestic Fuel, adding the switch away from fossil fuel use came with "clear and compelling rationale for our conversion to solar."

Built by Eco Trans Alliance of Sarasota, the vehicle moves around Pelican Bay's 43 acres of homes and recreation areas.

As plug-in electric vehicles become more abundant, vehicles that rely completely on solar roofs for their power source are a rarer sight.
