Air Force considers solar for Las Vegas base

Posted 1 year ago in the Solar Energy category by Danny Vo
A U.S. Air Force base in Nevada plans to draw at least 50 percent of its daytime electricity requirements by the end of 2011, according to published reports.

Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas would help take a step toward meeting the Defense Department’s objective of having one-quarter of its energy generated by renewable sources by 2025. As it eyes a 160-acre plot for the photovoltaic array, the base is actively seeking public feedback for the project it enthusiastically anticipates.

"The Air Force continues to aggressively pursue cleaner sources of energy," Major General Timothy Byers, the civil engineer overseeing all Air Force facilities, recently told the Las Vegas Sun. "Sustainable installations provide an operational advantage to our force and, needless to say, we are excited by the momentum in this arena."

The proposed solar plant would be twice as productive as a solar array that was installed in 2007. Neither a size nor a price tag has been attached to the proposed facility.

Nellis is home to the Air Force Warfare Center and fighter pilot wings. The deadline to provide feedback expires on Wednesday.
