The city council of Pasadena, California unanimously approved the city manager further exploring a 30-year pact to acquire electricity from a solar tower that will be constructed in Arizona, the Pasadena News Star reports.
Monday nights' approval does its part to help the state move toward its renewable energy goals as the city will purchase as much as 10 megawatts of power from La Paz Solar Tower. The tower is forecast to be functional in 2014, when about 4.5 percent of electricity would be provided by the plant, according to the assistant general manager of Pasadena Water and Power.
"That's a big contribution to meeting our goal of having 40 percent of our sales met by renewable sources by 2020," Eric Klinkner told the publication.
The first 15 years will cost $5 million per year and the second half of the contract will require an additional $52,000, he said.
Additional cities that are believed to be interested in purchasing the tower's power include Anaheim, Azusa, Burbank, Colton, Glendale and Riverside.
