NextEra Energy Resources has committed to buy four Canadian solar projects that will power about 6,440 households, according to Daily Markets.
With an estimated combined generation of 40 megawatts, the solar projects are in Ontario. First Solar, the Phoenix, Arizona-based seller, will complete construction before ceding ownership and operation. The Ontario Power Authority will purchase all electricity these projects produce under long-term contracts.
Though the projects are waiting on approval from the government, construction of each project is scheduled to begin during the first quarter of next year.
As Canada’s most populated province, Ontario will serve as host to plants owned by companies that will demonstrate the benefits of a clean-energy economy. Emissions of carbon dioxide will be reduced annually by almost 45,000 tons.
NextEra Energy of Juno Beach, Florida has holdings in the U.S. This acquisition represents the company’s first foray into Canada though its operations for energy-related products and services are active in both the U.S. and Canada. The company is the North America’s largest solar and wind energy generator in the U.S.
