New Jersey voters to cast ballots for solar plan on Tuesday

Voters in Woodbridge, New Jersey are putting one final day's worth of thought into whether to vote for a referendum calling for solar panel installation on township schools, according to the New Jersey Star-Ledger.

Residents will cast ballots Tuesday on the $32.5 million bond referendum that proposes replacing roofs with the panels. Schools superintendent John Crowe said he hopes the measure passes since the roofs are decrepit, energy costs and expenses will be slashed, and the panels will generate about 3.32 megawatts of renewable energy.

"We'll be able to sell our energy credits," he said. "It will reduce our energy [usage] significantly."

Polling sites will be open from 2 to 9 p.m. and the superintendent said the measure passing will result in one household's taxes increasing less than $7. But new roofs installed without solar paneling would prompt an annual tax increase of $25 since renewable energy generated would offset district costs.

Each school would be equipped with energy use and savings records that students can track, representing an educational benefit, according to the superintendent.

"From there, the students will be able to do a whole host of curricular activities," he said.
