South Carolina's largest solar water heater is at a newly constructed hotel in downtown Greenville, where it provides guests the opportunity to help conserve water and energy while also keeping clean, according to published reports.
That water heater is capable of pumping 3,000 gallons of water per day, all of which can be heated for guests at the hotel by the solar panels on top of the Courtyard by Marriott hotel, according to local television station WSPA.
"You hop in a hot shower and you know that sun, the hot water was just heated by the sun on the roof, that's an exciting thing," said Frank Marshall of FLS Energy, which constructed the solar water heater system.
Glycol, which heats water in the building, works similarly to antifreeze, according to Marshall. It absorbs the sun's heat and transfers that heat to the water that is used by the hotel.
Marshall said hotel guests need not worry about taking cold showers in the winter because the system will work better since the sun is at a lower angle.
