Denver International Airport announced this week that it has completed, in conjunction with Constellation Energy, a 4.4 megawatt, ground-mounted solar power system.
The energy company built and will manage the solar panels and the airport will purchase the electricity produced by the panels for the next 20 years, according to both entities. This is the third large solar power project for Denver International, which now boasts that it hosts 8 megawatts of solar power, the most generated at an airport in the United States.
"With the addition of this solar facility, Denver International Airport's three solar array systems now produce approximately 6 percent of the airport's total power requirements," said Kim Day, aviation manager with the airport. Day said the Denver International supports the projects because they are good for both the environment and the airport's budget.
According to the San Francisco International Airport, it is also trying to utilize more solar power. The airport said 2,832 solar panels have been placed on the roof of one of the terminals, which will create 445 kilowatts of power. The power will be used to provide power for daytime lighting within the terminal, the airport said.
