Researchers Find Americans’ Misconceptions on Solar Installation Cost

Are you, like most people, overestimating the cost of solar? According to a recent study performed by Sunrun, only 3% of surveyed U.S. adults are aware that installing solar can cost less than $1,000 upfront. The other 97% are overestimating solar energy costs by as much as $40,000. Installing solar can be done with as little as no money upfront thanks to power purchasing agreements and solar lease options.

Natcore Technology Developing “Absolute Black” Silicon Wafers

Solar panels have a long list of positives, from limitless electricity from the sun with no air pollution or carbon dioxide emissions to financial benefits, but they still have a hard time competing with coal, natural gas, oil and other sources of energy.

US Sets Tariffs on Solar Panels from China

The United States Commerce Department said it will impose tariffs on solar panels imported from China after concluding that the Chinese government provided illegal export subsidies to manufacturers there. The tariffs were smaller than some American industry executives had hoped for, 2.9 percent to 4.73 percent, which could dull their effect on the market. Nonetheless, additional tariffs could be imposed in May, when the Commerce Department is scheduled to decide whether China is dumping solar panels into the United States at prices below their actual cost. A finding of dumping would result in additional tariffs that could be far larger than the anti-subsidy tariffs. Whatever the size of the penalties, the ruling is likely to further heighten trade tensions with China, while holding implications for renewable energy policy in this country.

The Clinton Foundation Commits to Solar in Haiti

President Bill Clinton announced four new commitments to provide solar energy to Haiti by Clinton Foundation partners. Clinton took a three-day trip to Haiti to visit project sites featuring solar energy installations. He was accompanied by senior executives of large energy corporations from around the world, including China, Israel, and Ireland, as well as directors of large foundations interested in supporting projects in the energy sector. The trip was co-hosted by David Crane, CEO of NRG Energy. They toured sites in Haitis Central Plateau to view the progress of solar power installations funded by the $1 million commitment made through the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) by NRG and their implementing partner, the Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF). These projects all show the power solar energy has to transform the lives of thousands of Haitians, said President Clinton. They provide better opportunities for students to learn, entrepreneurs to create jobs, doctors to care for the sick, lower the cost of electricity and improve the environment. I am proud that my Foundations partners have committed to provide even more solar power to the people of Haiti, and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to see this work in action.

Phoenix Suns Harness the Sun’s Energy

Phoenix and Arizona Public Service officials, NBA Phoenix Suns executives and point guard Steve Nash switched on 966 solar panels on the roof of US Airways Center parking garage on Monday. They've named it the APS Suns Powered Solar Structure. Nash, who has been a spokesman for APS' energy-saving campaigns since 2008, said the new project fits in with his personal beliefs and practices in protecting the environment and reducing energy waste. "I feel really proud whether at home or whether at work that solar energy is part of that commitment," Nash said.

GE Invests in 127-Megawatt Arizona Solar Project

A General Electric Co. (GE) unit bought a $100 million stake in a 127-megawatt solar project that LS Power Group is developing in Arizona. The $550 million Arlington Valley Solar Energy II project near Arlington, Arizona, is expected to be complete at the end of 2013. The power will be sold, starting next year, to Sempra Energy (SRE)s San Diego Gas & Electric Co. which is required by California to meet 33 percent of its demand with renewable power.
