Common Questions About Solar Panels

With a wide array of solar options available, it can seem a little overwhelming at times. To help you on your way, here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about solar panels.

Are there different types of solar panels?
There are many varieties of solar panels. Solar tiles and shingles, thin film, regular silicon pv panels, even a spray on substance. New technology arrives every day. Every home is different and you will want to consult with a local installer to see what is best for your project.

How many do I need?
How many panels you need will be determined by your electrical usage. As they come in all shapes and sizes, solar systems are generally sized by electrical output rather than number of panels.

Is there a warranty?
Industry standard warranty is at least 25 years on the panels, though some are as long as 30.

Is there a difference in the brands?
There are as many brands as there are types of panels. Frankly every brand will tell you that it is the best and it is important to compare a few before making your decision.

Do they need maintenance?
Panels are virtually maintenance free and most of the time can be monitored for real time efficiency. They withstand any type of weather and even hurricane winds.

How long do they last?
Panels last 25-40 years. Typically at 35 years the efficiency of the panels begins to deteriorate, but they will have long since paid for themselves.

How long do they take to install?
Installations happen quicker than most home renovation projects and take 1-2 days, with some exceptions. The type of roof may affect the length of the install.

Can I install them myself?
Working with the utility grid or any electrical project in the home can be dangerous and requires training and certification. It is not recommended to install the panels yourself.

Can I take them with me if I move?
Once installed, the system is hardwired into your home. You cannot usually take them with you, but they add tremendous value by 'greening' your home.
